a now flourishing garden

Nestled opposite the medieval almshouse that is St Cross, Winchester, is this property and gardens. I have had the privilege of knowing the owners and re- developing the garden for last 2 years. When I first arrived at the garden it was rather being taking over by giant Cornus alba sibirica, bind weed and an unsuitably steep bank. There was little option but to get to work, considering everything to ensure I achieved the serene and elegant result the owners so desperately desired. I started by removing the Cornus along with any other harsh, unsuitable or unsightly plants. I then set out and planted a bursting bouquet of new plants to bring colour, texture, structure and interest all year round. I planted those beautiful deep purples and reds of the Acer palmatum's and the striking purple of the Solanum to draw the eye down the garden. The Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' is borrowed from next door and isn't it spectacular. The wisteria and rose on the pergola are existing however I bought them back to life in true splendour with careful pruning and care. The area around the outside dining area was originally quite hard with the brick wall and solid dark green of the Taxus. I wanted the area to look effortless however it takes quite a lot of effort to achieve just that. I chose plants that would soften the area but bring colour and fragrance. I achieved this with the use of grasses such as Stipa 'Pony tails' and Festuca 'Intence Blue' pairing it with plants such as Gura, Agapanthus and Rosa 'Kew Gardens' which are just beginning to show. The result isn't a garden as one might describe but more of a haven for the owners to come out to sit, relax and contemplate away all of life's little niggles and worries.

Our story

A waterlogged lawn

Located in Whiteley, Fareham is this finished design and landscape by Wiles Gardens.
The owners of this garden originally contacted me for advice on how to prevent their yearly battle with a waterlogged lawn. We discussed various options before finally concluding that we would remove the lawn altogether and instead create a blissful escape from the busy modern world through thoughtful planning and planting, increasing the aspect of the garden and inviting in more nature, fragrance and colour. I wanted to include the beautiful weathered mirror pools to add some subtle movement to the garden and add another dimension. There is no one I would intrust more to craft these custom pools than Ian Gill of Ian Gill Sculptures ( @iangillsculpture ). Hand crafted with love, care and enthusiasm which oozes out of every piece he creates. We couldn't be happier with Ian's work.
The garden was calling for a hard standing area to sit but I wanted to keep the landscape soft, so a traditional stone terrace wouldn't work. I instead opted for sleepers, staggering them to create a floating pontoon in an endless floral sea. Finally we added stepping stones to the pontoon to increase the depth of the garden drawing you into a destination.
This will be one to watch, and I know I certainly can't wait to see the garden fill out and become its own.

small space transformation

Located in Winchester, this client approached me about a sickly Fatsia japonica. Unfortunately, the Fatsia was simply in the wrong place, getting baked in the summer heat. I recommended a solution and I feel the pictures speak for themselves on this one; small spaces can create the biggest impact.

A neglected area that had definitely seen better days has been transformed into this clean, sleek and modern space. I have included the before pictures in this one as the difference is just amazing.

Planted is a Betula Utilis Jacquemonti 'Doorenbos', the bark beautifully contrasting against the cedar wood.

Uplighting the tree at night will add a mystic mood to the garden at night making the tree top terrace the perfect hideout on a summers evening. I've added Hakonechloa macra to soften the appearance, adding movement throughout the year.

From initial consultation to completion of this job was just two weeks! Have you got a small space that we could whip back into shape?

Subtropical escape

In a remarkable garden metamorphosis, we turned a neglected, shadowy corner into a vibrant subtropical oasis perfect for entertaining. First, we meticulously assessed the space, considering soil quality, sunlight patterns, and plant compatibility. Armed with this knowledge, we introduced a carefully curated selection of exotic plants, such as lush tree ferns, Hosta and vibrant flowering species, transforming the shady enclave into a thriving haven.

Strategic placement of outdoor lighting brought the area to life after sunset, creating an enchanting ambiance. To enhance the entertaining experience, we incorporated comfortable seating arrangements amidst the foliage, complemented by weather-resistant furnishings that seamlessly blended with the subtropical aesthetic.

A custom-designed water feature became the focal point, adding both tranquility and visual allure. The gentle trickling of water combined with the tropical flora transported visitors to a serene retreat, fostering a sense of escape within their own garden.

The final touch was the addition of decorative elements, like artistic pots and vibrant outdoor textiles, infusing personality and style. Our transformation not only revitalized a forgotten corner but also provided the client with a captivating space to host gatherings, making every moment in their garden an escape from the everyday.

Small with, big potential

Nestled within the confines of a quaint back garden, the Italian-themed garden design captivates with its timeless charm. Drawing inspiration from the rustic elegance of Tuscany, this outdoor oasis seamlessly blends the warmth of Mediterranean hues with the soothing greenery of carefully chosen plants.

As you enter the garden, a buff sandstone pathway meanders through lush greenery, creating a sense of wanderlust reminiscent of the narrow streets in Italian villages. The pathway is flanked by a delicate movement of plants, offering a symphony of textures and scents as you traverse the space.

In the heart of the garden, a focal point emerges—a classic Italian fountain surrounded by vibrant, fragrant flowers. The soothing melody of cascading water transports you to the romantic plazas of Florence, adding a touch of serenity to the atmosphere. Weathered terracotta pots, bursting with colorful blooms such as geraniums and lavender, adorn the edges of the terrace.

This Italian-themed garden is a testament to the beauty of thoughtful design and a celebration of the timeless allure of Italy's rich cultural and natural heritage. It's a sanctuary where one can escape the hustle of modern life and be transported to the sun-drenched landscapes of the Mediterranean.
